Bihar witnessed a moment of pure magic at Sonepur Mela, where one artwork made people stop, stare, and feel proud of their roots. The breathtaking sand art by Ashok Kumar, the renowned sand artist from Chhapra, turned the English Bazaar zone into a cultural hotspot overnight.
Sonepur Mela has always symbolised culture, history, and devotion. Yet this year, visitors found something even more compelling. At the residential complex of DM Saran, Aman Sameer, a stunning sand sculpture drew long queues of curious onlookers.
Created by Ashok Kumar (Sand Artist, Chhapra), the artwork brought the legendary Gaj–Graah Yuddh alive. Moreover, it portrayed the ancient tale with gripping clarity. A fierce crocodile attack, a helpless elephant, and Lord Vishnu arriving with His Sudarshan Chakra—every detail felt real.
Although the scene is mythological, the emotions felt contemporary. People connected instantly, and many even said the artwork helped them relive a story they grew up hearing.
The second section of the sand art added another layer of meaning. Naturally, Ashok highlighted the iconic symbols of Sonepur Mela—horses and bulls. These animals are not just part of Bihar’s trade tradition. They represent pride, heritage, and a bond that stretches across generations.
Additionally, Ashok shaped the Bihar map, the Saran district administration logo, the tourism department insignia, and the official Sonepur Mela emblem. Each symbol strengthened the cultural essence of the artwork. Visitors could instantly see how Bihar’s past and present coexist beautifully in one installation.
Although Ashok led the project, he did not work alone. Young artist Sonu Kumar played a crucial role. He supported the structure-building and provided creative inputs. As a result, the artwork stood out for both precision and imagination.
This collaboration showcased how Bihar’s young talents now work fearlessly alongside veterans, creating art that speaks globally. The energy felt refreshing, and many visitors shared their admiration on social media.
Bihar is often celebrated for its festivals, rituals, and traditions. Yet artworks like this remind us that culture grows only when artists receive space and recognition. Thankfully, Sonepur Mela offered that space.
Furthermore, this sand art became more than a display. It became a bridge between mythology, heritage, and modern Bihar. Visitors experienced emotion, nostalgia, and pride—all at once. And that is exactly what makes this artwork unforgettable.
