Bihar is stepping into a new era of development! With two mega transport projects worth ₹7,616 crore approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), the state is set for a massive transformation in road and rail connectivity. These projects will not just cut travel time but also create jobs, fuel industries, and open up opportunities for millions.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the construction of an 82.4 km four-lane greenfield highway between Mokama and Munger. Built under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), this project will cost ₹4,447.38 crore.
The highway will connect Mokama, Barahiya, Lakhisarai, Jamalpur, and Munger, further extending towards Bhagalpur. With this, travel time will reduce to just 1.5 hours, and vehicles will move at speeds up to 100 kmph.
More importantly, the region is turning into an industrial powerhouse. Munger hosts an ordnance factory, Jamalpur has a major locomotive workshop, and Bhagalpur is already famous for silk and textiles. At the same time, Barahiya is emerging as a food packaging and agro-warehousing hub. This road will act as the lifeline for these industries.
Additionally, the highway project will generate over 3 million man-days of employment, directly and indirectly, sparking further economic growth across Bihar.
The Cabinet also approved the doubling of the Bhagalpur–Dumka–Rampurhat rail line, covering 177 km across Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. The ₹3,169 crore investment will ease congestion, improve punctuality, and boost freight as well as passenger movement.
The project directly benefits 441 villages and nearly 2.87 million people, including residents of Banka, Godda, and Dumka—three aspirational districts. Connectivity to pilgrimage hubs like Deoghar (Baba Baidyanath Dham) and Tarapith (Shakti Peeth) will also improve.
Moreover, freight capacity will rise by 15 million tonnes per year. Key commodities like coal, cement, and fertilisers will move faster, reducing logistics costs. By saving 50 million litres of fuel annually and cutting 240 million kg of carbon emissions, this project equals planting 10 million trees.
Together, the highway and rail projects signal a turning point for Bihar. Faster travel, industrial growth, cleaner transport, and lakhs of jobs will reshape the state’s economic landscape. With better links to adjoining states, Bihar is ready to become a stronger hub for trade, textiles, agriculture, and logistics.
