Electric Crematoriums to Rise in 41 Bihar Cities — ₹248 Cr Boost to Clean Rivers & Modernize Farewells
Bihar is changing, and it’s visible in actions, not just words. In a transformative step under Saat Nischay 2, the state will see the construction of electric crematoriums in 41 major cities. These aren’t just modern structures—they symbolize dignity, hygiene, and sustainability.
The government has approved a budget of ₹248 crore. So far, Supaul, Jehanabad, and Arwal have completed construction, while 36 other cities are racing ahead to catch up.
Traditional funeral practices, although sacred, have been putting immense pressure on river ecosystems. Wood-based cremations pollute water, release harmful smoke, and leave ghats littered with waste.
By contrast, electric crematoriums are efficient, eco-friendly, and faster. They help:
Reduce air and water pollution
Minimize deforestation caused by firewood use
Maintain hygiene and order at public ghats
Speed up cremation during crises like floods or pandemics
This change not only preserves traditions but also aligns them with today’s environmental needs.
The Urban Development and Housing Department is overseeing the project. Minister Jivesh Kumar stated that this initiative will improve sanitation and simplify the cremation process for families.
Officials have been instructed to monitor each city’s progress actively. Thanks to these efforts, cities like Baadh and Jhanjharpur have already received tenders and green signals to begin work.
Each crematorium will stand near riverbanks, ensuring ease of access and reducing pollution at the same time.
This project covers all 38 district headquarters, along with three additional urban hubs. These extra cities were selected based on their population density and need for improved funeral facilities.
By placing the crematoriums on riverbanks, the state ensures that cultural practices remain untouched, while the environment stays protected.
This isn’t just a project—it’s a message. Under the Saat Nischay 2 vision, Bihar is proving that modernization and tradition can walk side by side. With ₹248 crore invested wisely, the state is taking action that has long-term social and ecological benefits.
Instead of relying on outdated methods, Bihar is paving the way for a cleaner, smarter future—one city at a time.
These are the updates that matter. Real change, real progress—happening now across Bihar.
