Canteens, Identity Cards & Women Empowerment: Bihar’s Groundbreaking Move to Strengthen Blocks via JEEViKA
Bihar Steps Boldly Forward—Canteens in Every Block, Led by Empowered Women
Bihar isn’t just planning change—it’s making it happen. In a major development, the state government has announced that every block headquarters will soon host a special canteen. These canteens will cater not only to government employees but also to the general public, offering clean, affordable meals every day.
More importantly, the responsibility to run these canteens will lie with the women of JEEViKA Self-Help Groups (SHGs). That’s where the real impact lies.
Where Meals Meet Empowerment
Rural Development Minister Shrawan Kumar has taken a decisive step. He directed officials to implement this initiative through JEEViKA groups, ensuring it creates real opportunities for rural women. This isn’t just a welfare scheme—it’s a livelihood mission.
These canteens won’t only serve meals; they’ll serve confidence, skill-building, and dignity. By involving SHGs directly, the government is turning community kitchens into engines of change.
Identity Cards for JEEViKA Didis: A Long Overdue Recognition
To strengthen the identity and status of women involved in JEEViKA, the government will issue official ID cards. For the first time, these women will carry proof of their hard work and contribution.
Moreover, the administration plans to launch tailoring centers in community buildings across panchayats. These centers will train women in stitching and design, paving the way for self-employment.
Boosting Local Economy with Rural Haats
In addition to the canteens and sewing hubs, Bihar will set up rural haats—vibrant markets where SHGs can showcase and sell their products. These platforms will allow women to expand their reach, access more customers, and earn a fair income.
The plan also includes maize processing units, led by JEEViKA Didis. These units will create local jobs, reduce crop wastage, and add value to agriculture.
Lifting Traditional Artisans Through Focused Schemes
The government hasn’t ignored traditional artisans and micro-entrepreneurs. People engaged in trades like puffed rice selling, pottery, or utensil making will now benefit from targeted financial schemes.
By offering these workers skill training and credit support, Bihar aims to uplift small-scale livelihoods in a sustainable manner.
Urban SHGs Get Equal Importance
While rural areas remain the focus, urban SHGs are receiving attention too. Minister Shrawan Kumar clearly instructed officials to prioritize both rural and urban groups equally. He warned that failure to deliver results will attract disciplinary action.
This push ensures that the benefits of empowerment aren’t limited by geography.
