Bihar’s Bold Move: ₹15,343 Crore Subsidy to Keep Electricity Affordable

Electricity is the backbone of modern life. Keeping it affordable for everyone is crucial. Bihar has taken a remarkable step with the मुख्यमंत्री विद्युत उपभोक्ता सहायता योजना (Chief Minister’s Electricity Consumer Support Scheme). The state government has allocated a massive ₹15,343 crore subsidy to ensure no additional burden on consumers.

No Increase in Electricity Tariffs for 2023-24

Despite the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission’s 24.10% proposed tariff hike, electricity prices will remain unchanged. Thanks to the government’s intervention, energy charges in the 2023-24 financial year will be the same as last year. This initiative shields millions of residents from higher electricity bills.

Major Benefits Across Different Sectors

The subsidy benefits every sector, making electricity more accessible and affordable.

1. Agricultural Sector: Boosting Farmers’ Productivity

  • Farmers receive a 92% subsidy, making electricity available at just ₹0.55 per unit.
  • Reduced power costs help farmers invest in irrigation and modern equipment.

2. Industrial Sector: Driving Economic Growth

  • The government covers 21% of electricity costs for industries.
  • This support encourages businesses to expand, creating jobs and economic development.

3. Domestic Consumers: Relief for Households

  • Rural households pay only 28% of their actual electricity bill.
  • Urban households using up to 200 units pay 56.3%, with the remaining 43.7% subsidized.

Bihar’s Energy Infrastructure and Future Plans

Bihar has worked hard to improve its electricity infrastructure. In 2005, electricity losses were at 59%, but today, they have dropped to 19.91%. This efficiency has allowed the government to provide affordable power to 2.7 crore consumers.

Looking ahead, Bihar is investing in solar power and grid expansion:

  • A 400 KV grid substation will start in Bakhtiyarpur next year.
  • Solar projects like 254 MW in Kajra, Lakhisarai, and floating solar plants in Bikram and Phulwariya are underway.
