From Football Fields to Visionaries: How Bihar’s Rural Girls Are Becoming Footballers and Optometrists

In the heart of Bihar, just 50 kilometers from Patna, lies a remarkable story of transformation—a journey from football fields to thriving careers. The Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital is not just a hub for eye care; it’s a powerhouse for empowering underprivileged girls. Through an extraordinary program called “Football to Eyeball,” this institution is reshaping futures, blending education, football, and professional training to turn dreams into reality.

A Unique Blend of Sports and Education

Since 2009, 725 rural girls have become self-reliant through this initiative. These girls are not only excelling as optometrists and technicians but also proving their mettle on the football field. Out of them, 15 have already represented Bihar at the national level, with Sonia Rai even captaining the state women’s football team.

What makes this initiative unique is its dual approach:

  • Free residential education and training for girls who have completed their 10th or 12th grades.
  • Mandatory football sessions to instill discipline, teamwork, and confidence.

The Vision Behind the Program

Mritunjay Tiwari, CEO of the Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital and a former professional footballer from Kolkata, started this initiative. Inspired by a simple yet poignant scene of rural girls kicking a paper ball, he envisioned using football as a tool for empowerment.

The program isn’t limited to academics and sports. The girls complete foundational courses and graduate as optometrists, equipped with skills for sustainable employment. Astonishingly, 286 girls are currently enrolled, living, learning, and playing—completely free of cost.

Global Impact and Partnerships

The impact of “Football to Eyeball” reaches far beyond India. The program has ties with the Chelsea Football Club in London, which granted Tiwari an active membership. Inspired by this, Belgium initiated the Belgium Babes Football League, contributing to the cause with donations for every goal scored. This international collaboration highlights the program’s global resonance.

Breaking Stereotypes and Shattering Barriers

This initiative comes with one critical condition: parents must pledge not to marry off their daughters before the age of 23. This bold step ensures that the girls focus on their education and career without societal pressures holding them back.

The Numbers Speak Volumes

  • 36% growth in self-reliance among rural girls in the region.
  • Participation in 15 national-level football tournaments by program beneficiaries.
  • Over 725 girls trained to date, with many pursuing higher education, including MBA and Ph.D. programs.

This transformative initiative demonstrates the power of combining sports, education, and unwavering determination. With every kick on the football field and every eye examination conducted, these girls are rewriting their destinies.
