“Patna’s Pink Revolution: Women Take the Lead as PMC’s ‘Pink Innovation’ Wins Global Spotlight at ICRS 2026”
Patna’s Women Power Takes Global Stage
Patna is making history — and this time, it’s women leading the charge. The Patna Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) bold initiative ‘Pink Innovation’ has earned global recognition, positioning the city among world leaders in women-led sanitation and sustainable urban governance.
The project has been officially selected for presentation at the International Conference on Resilient Systems (ICRS 2026), to be held in Delft, the Netherlands, in March 2026. This marks a major milestone for Bihar’s capital, highlighting its emerging reputation in waste management, gender inclusion, and city resilience.
The ‘Pink Innovation’ Model: A Blend of Dignity, Inclusion & Sustainability
At its core, Pink Innovation is not just about toilets or waste facilities — it’s about empowering women and redefining how cities think about sanitation.
Under this initiative, PMC has rolled out several women-centric sanitation projects designed to ensure safety, dignity, and participation. Among the most impactful are:
-
Pink Toilets: Mobile and permanent toilets exclusively for women, including changing rooms and Loo Cafés. These serve women during festivals, fairs, and public events — offering them clean, secure spaces when they need them most. Currently, eight Pink Toilets (four mobile, two permanent, and two Loo Cafés) are operational across Patna.
-
Pink Material Recovery Facility (MRF): A space that champions women’s role in waste segregation and recycling. This model not only enhances the city’s cleanliness but also generates formal livelihood opportunities for women in the sanitation workforce.
These initiatives strongly align with the Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban 2.0, supporting India’s march toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focused on sanitation, gender equality, and environmental sustainability.

From Local Innovation to Global Recognition
Speaking on the achievement, Municipal Commissioner Yashpal Meena said,
“It is a matter of pride for Patna Municipal Corporation. Our ‘Pink Innovation’ initiative has not only redefined sanitation in the city but also empowered women and strengthened our commitment to sustainable development. Representing India at Delft is a great honour.”
This recognition places Patna on the global map of urban innovation. Moreover, the Pink Innovation model is now being replicated by other city corporations across India, serving as a blueprint for inclusive and sustainable governance.
The story of Patna’s women-led sanitation revolution reflects what happens when innovation meets empathy, and governance meets grassroots empowerment.
Bihar’s Pride on a Global Platform
Patna’s Pink Innovation showcases how local governance, when driven by inclusion, can inspire global admiration. It’s not just about infrastructure; it’s about changing mindsets, building systems that value women’s leadership, and creating spaces that reflect equality and respect.
As Patna prepares to present its story at ICRS 2026, it carries with it the voice of countless women who turned challenges into change.
