Bihar’s Hidden Gem to Get a ₹50-Crore Makeover: East Champaran’s Historic Horse Race Pond(घुड़दौड़ पोखर) Set for a Grand Transformation!

A Forgotten Heritage Pond to Get a New Life in East Champaran

Once a forgotten landmark, East Champaran’s Horse Race Pond—locally known as Ghordodar Pond—is set to get a stunning revival. The Bihar government has initiated plans to transform this historic site in Padumker Panchayat into a world-class tourist destination.

The Tourism Department has approved ₹13.54 crore for the project and released the first ₹3 crore for the financial year 2025–26 to begin the work. The upcoming facilities include walking tracks, guest houses, parks, markets, a banquet hall, and even a water sports restaurant — all designed to boost local tourism and employment.

From Neglect to Revival: A Heritage Site to Be Transformed

For years, the pond remained neglected despite its historical significance. Earlier, the Water Resources Department sanctioned ₹10 crore for cleaning, deepening, and developing walking tracks. Now, with an additional ₹13.54 crore already approved and another ₹25 crore under process, the total investment is expected to touch ₹50 crore.

The project aims to make it a world-class tourist destination featuring motorboat rides, selfie points, and recreational parks. This is not just a development plan — it’s a revival of East Champaran’s cultural pride.

The Man Who Sparked the Change

The transformation journey began when Prakash Singh, grandson of former Bihar minister Rajendra Pratap Singh, wrote to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar highlighting the pond’s historical and cultural value. Acting promptly, the Chief Minister directed both the Tourism and Water Resources Departments to inspect the site.

Following their visit, East Champaran District Magistrate Saurabh Jorwal also inspected the area. Later, during his Pragati Yatra on December 24, Nitish Kumar officially announced that the pond would be restored and developed as a tourist destination. Soon after, tenders were issued, and the initial phase of renovation began.

Local Residents See Hope and Opportunity

The excitement among locals is growing every day. Residents believe that this initiative will restore Ghordodar Pond’s lost glory and bring long-awaited prosperity. The project promises to create employment opportunities for youth through boating, hospitality, and tourism-based businesses.

According to Panchayat head Nidhi Kumari, the pond is not only a heritage symbol but also a gateway to economic growth. She added that once the site is developed, it will attract visitors from nearby districts like Shivhar and Sitamarhi, as well as from Nepal. The project, she said, will turn the pond into a symbol of pride for East Champaran.

A New Chapter for Bihar’s Tourism Story

Bihar is reimagining its identity through tourism — and East Champaran’s Horse Race Pond stands as the next big milestone. This ₹50-crore initiative reflects Bihar’s broader vision to promote eco-tourism, cultural heritage, and rural development together.

When completed, the project will not only draw tourists but also transform lives, creating a sustainable model of growth that connects tradition with modern recreation.
