From Khagaria to Kunzum La: Bihar Labourer Rohit Kumar’s Marathon Dream Towards the 2028 Olympics

A Runner With No Coach, No Gear—Just Grit

“No coach. No fancy gear. Just raw resolve.” That’s how the Army described Rohit Kumar, a 32-year-old daily wage labourer from Khagaria, Bihar, who recently stunned the nation with his marathon achievement.

Working at a construction site in Delhi, Rohit spends his mornings not on rest but on the road. While most wake up at sunrise, he laces his worn-out shoes at 4:30 am. His dream? To one day wear the Indian jersey at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics in the Triathlon.

Spiti Marathon Glory Against All Odds

At the Surya Spiti Challenge 2025, Rohit competed in the brutal 77 km Kunzum La–Kaza Ultra. With icy winds, thin air, and steep climbs, this race isn’t for the faint-hearted. Yet Rohit crossed the finish line second, clocking 7 hours and 44 minutes.

The Army’s Uttar Bharat shared his story on X, writing:
“He doesn’t chase records or sponsorships. He runs to survive. His finish line was not just a medal—it was dignity, hope, and a step closer to his Olympic dream.”

This wasn’t his first big achievement. In fact, Rohit has participated in more than 100 marathons, often averaging five races in a single month. Now, he says he focuses on quality over quantity.

Life Between Labour and Long Runs

Balancing life as a construction worker with the demands of training isn’t easy. Yet Rohit chooses sacrifice over excuses. Out of his modest ₹30,000 monthly income, he spends nearly ₹20,000 on his diet and running equipment.

Inspired by marathon greats from London, New York, and Tokyo, he began training in 2020 without a coach. Every run is self-taught, every step powered by sheer will. And when asked about his next step, he simply smiles: “I will get another podium finish.”

The Road Ahead: Arunachal and Beyond

After Spiti, Rohit has already received an invitation to another high-altitude marathon in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh. The Indian Army has promised to take care of his travel, food, and lodging. He hopes this will be another podium finish that pushes him closer to his Olympic dream.

For Rohit, the journey is about more than medals. He runs for those who remain unseen—the countless daily wage workers who shoulder heavy burdens yet carry silent dreams in their hearts.
