What if a small loan could change the future of a family, a village, and even a state? For 1.4 crore women linked with Jeevika groups, this possibility has now become a reality. A fresh initiative is opening doors for affordable loans, designed to fuel small businesses and cottage industries across Bihar.
Through the newly established Jeevika Nidhi Credit Cooperative Union, women can now access loans at much lower interest rates. This union, launched with a fund of ₹105 crore, promises to ease the burden of costly borrowing. Until now, many women relied on financial institutions that charged high interest, limiting their ability to expand. With Jeevika Nidhi, affordable credit is finally within their reach.
At present, women-led cottage industries already generate a combined turnover of nearly ₹56,000 crore. Their contribution also boosts the state’s GST collection significantly. With cheaper credit, these entrepreneurs can scale faster, invest in better resources, and create more jobs at the grassroots level. In turn, families, villages, and the wider community will benefit.
This step is not just about money—it is about identity. Women are being recognized not just as homemakers but as entrepreneurs, leaders, and changemakers. Economic independence strengthens families, uplifts communities, and gives women a stronger voice in decision-making. When women thrive, society thrives with them.
Over the years, multiple steps have supported women’s empowerment in Bihar. From 50% reservation in panchayat elections to 35% reservation in teacher and police jobs, women have steadily gained space in public life. Today, more than two lakh women work as teachers, and Bihar has the largest number of women in its police force. Recently, another financial aid scheme was also introduced, offering up to ₹2 lakh for self-employment.
Affordable loans mean women can dream bigger. They can move from survival-based work to growth-driven enterprises. They can invest in innovation, build sustainable ventures, and provide education and opportunities to their children. With Jeevika Nidhi, the journey from self-help groups to successful enterprises becomes much smoother.
