‘Made-in-Bihar’ Locomotive to Power Africa’s 3,000 Cr Iron Ore Project

🇮🇳 Bihar Builds for the World: First ‘Made-in-Marhowrah’ Locomotive to Power Africa’s Largest Iron Ore Project 🌍

From Bihar to Guinea: How a Quiet Town is Powering Africa’s Iron Backbone

“Bihar ka Marhowrah, ab duniya ke nakshon pe!”
Yes, you read that right. On June 20, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the first indigenous locomotive for export, built not in a metro city, but at Marhowrah in Bihar—a town now redefining India’s industrial story.

This isn’t just a one-off milestone. This is India making a bold, global mark—straight from the heart of Bihar.

An Export Worth ₹3,000 Crore, A Message Worth Billions

The Marhowrah manufacturing facility, operated by Wabtec Corporation, will supply 150 locomotives to SimFer’s Simandou iron ore project in the Republic of Guinea over the next three years.
The total project value? More than ₹3,000 crore.
This is not just business—it’s an international endorsement of India’s engineering brilliance.

Built for Performance: Speed, Strength, and Smart Tech

These locomotives are no ordinary machines.
They’re capable of hauling 100 wagons in pairs at peak performance, complete with air-conditioned cabins, microwaves, refrigerators, and even waterless toilets.
Not only that, but they meet top-tier emission norms, come with fire detection systems, and are engineered for ergonomic comfort.

Thanks to features like DPWCS (Distributed Power Wireless Control System), these locos promise synchronised operation and high-efficiency freight management—something that’s rare even in many developed economies.

Three Gauges, One Factory: Built for the Global Grid

To manufacture these diverse machines, Marhowrah’s Wabtec plant laid down broad gauge, standard gauge, and cape gauge tracks—an engineering feat that few factories in the world can claim.

This flexible infrastructure allowed India to win the project via global bidding, not just compete.

Jobs, Innovation, and Global Reputation—All in One Package

Executive Director Dilip Kumar of the Railway Board noted how this export project is positioning Marhowrah as a global hub.
From local employment to cutting-edge technology transfer, Bihar is not just making trains—it’s making headlines.

This isn’t just about Guinea or locomotives. It’s about India’s promise to the world. It’s about Atmanirbhar Bharat—India as a producer, innovator, and global infrastructure partner.

India-Africa Ties: Now on Fast Track

With this project, India isn’t just exporting locomotives—it’s laying tracks to deeper economic partnerships with Africa.
Guinea’s largest iron ore project will now run on the wheels of Indian engineering and Bihari resilience.

Mr. Kumar summed it up best:

“This is a shining example of Atmanirbhar Bharat powering global infrastructure through innovation and quality manufacturing.”

Bihar is building more than machines—it’s building its global identity.
Marhowrah is not just making trains—it’s making history.
India is not just exporting hardware—it’s exporting trust.
