Patna’s Landmark Double-Decker Flyover: A New Era in Urban Commute

Patna is about to witness a game-changing transformation in its infrastructure. The much-awaited double-decker flyover is set to be inaugurated next month, promising smoother traffic flow and improved connectivity. With an investment of ₹442 crore, this project will redefine the way people navigate the city.

A Closer Look at the Project

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar spearheaded this ambitious project, which began in December 2021. Since then, significant progress has been made to ease congestion along Ashok Rajpath. The flyover features two distinct levels, each designed to optimize traffic movement:

  • First Level: Covering 1.5 km, this section connects Patna College to BN College. As a result, students and professionals will experience a much faster and hassle-free commute.

  • Second Level: Spanning 2.2 km, it links Kargil Chowk to Science College. Consequently, this upper tier will help decongest one of Patna’s busiest roads.

Additionally, the flyover includes 7.5-meter-wide carriageways on each level, ensuring ample space for smooth traffic flow. Furthermore, the multi-level car parking facility at PMCH will integrate with the flyover, further reducing congestion on the ground.

Current Status and Challenges

Construction is in its final stages, with most of the structural work completed.

  • 99 percent of the substructure is finished.

  • 88 percent of the superstructure is ready, with 106 out of 112 spans installed.

However, some challenges have caused delays. The Patna Metro Rail project near Anjuman Islamia Hall and PMCH has occupied a portion of land, requiring modifications in the construction plan. Nevertheless, officials are confident that the flyover will be fully operational by April 2025.

What This Means for Patna

Once completed, the double-decker flyover will bring several benefits to the city:

  • Reduced Traffic Jams – With dedicated lanes, congestion along Ashok Rajpath will significantly decrease.

  • Faster Connectivity – The flyover directly connects key institutions, making travel more convenient for students, professionals, and emergency services.

  • Economic Growth – Improved infrastructure will make the area more accessible, encouraging businesses to flourish.
