From a Small Medicine Shop in Patna to Alkem Laboratories: The Inspiring Journey of Bihar’s Samprada Singh
Every big business has a beginning. Sometimes, it begins with a grand idea. Sometimes, it starts with a small shop, a few customers, and the determination to build something better.
For Samprada Singh, the journey began in Patna—with a small chemist’s store and a dream connected to healthcare.
Decades later, the name he helped build, Alkem Laboratories, would become one of India’s major pharmaceutical companies. His story is a reminder that a humble beginning does not have to limit the scale of a dream.
From a Village in Bihar to a New Beginning in Patna
Samprada Singh was born into a farming family in Okri village, in present-day Jehanabad district of Bihar. His family’s livelihood depended largely on agriculture, which was often affected by difficult conditions.
Singh had once hoped to become a doctor. Although that dream did not take shape, his interest in healthcare remained.
After completing his education, he explored agriculture and other work. But changing circumstances pushed him to look for a different path.
In 1953, he opened a small medical store in Patna. The shop brought him closer to the world of medicines and healthcare—and gave him his first experience of running a business.
The Small Shop That Became a Learning Ground
Running a chemist’s shop was not simply about selling medicines.
Singh had to understand products, remember prices, build relationships with customers, and manage the everyday demands of a small business.
In a time before digital billing systems, even remembering medicine names and prices could be a challenge. Singh reportedly learned the details through persistence and regular practice.
The shop was more than a source of income. It became a place where he could understand how medicines reached people—and how the pharmaceutical business worked.
That experience would later become the foundation of a much larger ambition.
From Retail Pharmacy to Pharmaceutical Distribution
A few years after opening his medical store, Singh began looking beyond retail.
In 1959, he started Laxmi Pharma, a pharmaceutical distribution business. He later established Magadh Pharma in Patna, building a wider distribution network and working with pharmaceutical companies.
Distribution gave him a closer view of the industry. He learned how medicines moved from manufacturers to distributors and then to pharmacies and patients.
It also helped him build relationships across the sector.
This stage was important because it gave Singh something more valuable than a business name: experience of the pharmaceutical market from the ground up.
The Decision to Build a Pharmaceutical Company
After years in distribution, Singh began to see the limits of the business he had built in Patna.
He wanted to move further—to manufacture and market medicines under his own company.
That ambition led him to Mumbai, where he and his younger brother, Basudeo Narain Singh, established Alkem Laboratories in 1973. Reports have described the brothers’ initial capital as around ₹5 lakh.
The transition was not effortless. Building a pharmaceutical company required investment, partnerships, manufacturing capability, and the ability to compete in a market where international companies held a strong position.
But Singh’s years of experience in retail and distribution had given him a practical understanding of the industry.
A Brother’s Partnership and a Shared Vision
Alkem’s story is also the story of two brothers working together.
Samprada Singh brought the ambition and experience that had grown through years in the pharmaceutical trade. Basudeo Narain Singh became a key partner in building the company’s operations and distributor relationships.
The company’s early years required persistence and a willingness to learn. The founders were not simply entering a new market; they were building a business that would have to earn trust among doctors, distributors, pharmacies, and patients.
Their partnership became an important part of Alkem’s growth.
The Breakthrough That Helped Alkem Grow
Alkem’s growth took time.
One important milestone came in 1989, when the company launched Taxim, an antibiotic brand that became a major success. It helped strengthen Alkem’s position in the Indian pharmaceutical market.
The company continued to develop its portfolio and expand its manufacturing and research capabilities. Over the years, it grew from a business built by entrepreneurs with roots in Bihar into a major pharmaceutical company with operations across multiple markets.
What Makes Samprada Singh’s Story Meaningful?
The most inspiring part of Singh’s journey is not simply the size of the company he helped build.
It is the sequence of steps that came before it.
He began with a small medicine shop. He learned the business through daily work. He moved into distribution, built relationships, recognised the limits of his existing model, and took the risk of entering manufacturing.
Each stage prepared him for the next.
His journey offers a lesson for small business owners: growth does not always come from making one giant leap. Sometimes, it comes from understanding your work deeply, building trust, and taking the next step when you are ready.
A Bihar Entrepreneur’s Legacy
Samprada Singh passed away in 2019, but the company he co-founded continues to carry his legacy.
His story began in a village in Bihar and took shape through a small shop in Patna. From there, it moved through distribution, entrepreneurship, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
For aspiring entrepreneurs, especially those starting with limited resources, his journey offers a powerful reminder:
A small beginning can become the foundation of something much bigger—when it is supported by experience, persistence, and the courage to grow.
