Bihar Plans ₹10,000 Crore for Two Greenfield Airports in Ajgaibinath Dham and Sonepur

Two proposed airports could change how people travel across Bihar—but both projects still have important steps ahead.

The Bihar government has proposed a combined first-phase investment of ₹10,000 crore for greenfield airports at Ajgaibinath Dham and Sonepur. On September 28, Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary reviewed the plans and directed officials to speed up land acquisition and related work.

The proposal includes ₹3,500 crore for Ajgaibinath Dham airport and ₹6,500 crore for Sonepur International Airport. Both are planned under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. The state government will cover land acquisition and connectivity costs.

What Was Reviewed?

Officials reviewed the projects’ master plans, traffic surveys, technical and economic feasibility reports, land acquisition, airport capacity and supporting infrastructure.

The Chief Minister also called for better coordination among departments and regular progress reviews. However, the projects are still in the planning and procedural stages; the meeting did not announce an airport opening date.

Ajgaibinath Dham Airport: A Focus on Pilgrims and Regional Travel

The proposed Ajgaibinath Dham airport is expected to improve air connectivity for Munger, Lakhisarai, Jamui, Bhagalpur, Banka, Khagaria and Begusarai, along with nearby areas.

The government also expects the airport to support religious tourism, especially during the Shravani Mela. Pilgrims travelling to Ajgaibinath Dham could benefit if the project moves forward and provides the planned connectivity.

Officials reviewed the airport’s master plan, including infrastructure and runway requirements for large aircraft.

Sonepur Airport: Passenger Travel and Cargo

The proposed Sonepur airport in Saran district is planned as an international airport, with an emphasis on large aircraft, cargo facilities and passenger connectivity.

According to the project details discussed at the review meeting, it could improve air access for 22 districts of Bihar, as well as nearby districts in Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh.

Cargo facilities could also support the movement of goods. However, the scale of any commercial benefit will depend on the airport’s eventual design, services and connectivity.

What Could the Airports Mean for Bihar?

Better air connectivity can make travel easier for residents, visitors and businesses. For religious tourism, improved access could help pilgrims reach destinations such as Ajgaibinath Dham.

Meanwhile, Sonepur’s planned cargo facilities could create another option for businesses moving goods. The projects may also support tourism and economic activity in surrounding districts.

Still, these are expected benefits, not guaranteed outcomes. Their impact will depend on construction, airline services, road connections and how effectively the airports serve local needs.

Land Acquisition and Connectivity Are Key Next Steps

The state government will bear the costs of land acquisition and connectivity for both projects. Officials reviewed the acquisition process under the Bihar Raiyati Land Purchase Policy, 2026.

Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary directed departments to move the required procedures forward within a set timeframe. He also called for regular reviews to track progress and address delays.

For people living near the proposed sites, land acquisition and infrastructure planning will be important parts of the process. The current announcement does not provide a confirmed construction completion date or passenger service launch date.
