Patna to Get a High-Tech ₹21 Crore Indoor Stadium

Patna is getting a new indoor stadium. But the interesting part is not the ₹21.20 crore price tag. It is what Bihar plans to do with the facility after the ribbon-cutting.

A new Indoor Stadium-2 is coming up at the Patliputra Sports Complex in Kankarbagh, Patna. The project is estimated at ₹21.20 crore and is targeted for completion by March 2027.

The proposed facility will cover around 30,864 sq ft. Around 25,000 sq ft will make up the sports floor. It will also have seating for more than 1,000 spectators, athlete accommodation, broadcasting facilities, changing rooms, and warm-up areas.

On paper, it sounds like another sports infrastructure project. But Bihar’s recent sporting activity makes this announcement more interesting.

Patna Already Has a Sports Audience

Patliputra Sports Complex is not a new venue. The 16-acre complex has been operating since 2012. It already supports both indoor and outdoor sports. More importantly, the venue is being used.

The complex hosted the Bihar Women’s Kabaddi League in 2026. It has also hosted national-level competitions and international sporting events. In fact, Bihar’s sports calendar has expanded quickly. The state hosted the Khelo India Youth Games 2025 across five cities, featuring 27 medal sports, with Patliputra Sports Complex among the venues.

So, the new stadium is not being built into a sporting vacuum. There is already demand for competition space.

The Bigger Shift Is Happening Beyond the Stadium

Bihar’s sports infrastructure is increasingly being connected with talent development. The state’s Khelo India Youth Games impact assessment says upgraded venues are being positioned as dedicated training and high-performance centres for athletes with medal potential.

Meanwhile, the national sports policy environment is also changing. In 2026, the Union government announced the Khelo India Mission as part of a longer-term approach to talent development, coaching, sports science, competitions, and infrastructure. Then, in July 2026, the Union Cabinet approved a revamped Khelo India scheme and enhanced support for National Sports Federations with a combined outlay of ₹36,441 crore for 2026-27 to 2030-31.

That puts Bihar’s ₹21.20 crore project into a much larger national trend: India is investing more heavily in the sports pipeline, and Bihar is building more places for that pipeline to operate.

And This Stadium Is Designed for More Than One Sport

The proposed indoor facility will support several disciplines, including:

• Basketball
• Boxing
• Volleyball
• Sepak Takraw
• Wrestling
• Gymnastics
• Yoga

That flexibility matters. A single-purpose venue can remain unused between events. A multi-sport facility has more chances to stay active throughout the year. The planned retractable seating also allows the same sports floor to adapt between training sessions and larger competitions.

The Athlete Accommodation May Be the Most Important Part

The project includes separate 40-bed dormitories for male and female athletes. That means athletes can stay at the complex during training camps and competitions.

For a state like Bihar, this matters. Talent does not always come from Patna—it can come from a district, a small town, or a village. A talented athlete should not have to solve accommodation, training access, and competition logistics before they can even focus on sport. That is why athlete housing can be just as important as the court itself.

Bihar Is Also Getting More Comfortable Hosting Bigger Competitions

The Bihar State Sports Authority’s current calendar includes national and international competitions across multiple disciplines. Bihar hosted the Asia Hockey Cup 2025 for the first time, the ISTAF Sepaktakraw World Cup 2025 at Patliputra Sports Complex, and the Khelo India Youth Games in 2025.

Earlier, the challenge was: Can Bihar host major sporting events? Now another question is emerging: Can Bihar turn those events into a long-term advantage for its athletes?

A system where infrastructure, coaching, competitions, accommodation, sports science, and talent identification work together is where the real value of a new stadium could emerge when Indoor Stadium-2 opens its doors in 2027.
