From Bodh Gaya’s Buddhist Meditation Centre (₹165.44 Cr) to Sonepur Mela Ground (₹24.29 Cr) and Ambika Bhawani Temple (₹13.29 Cr), Bihar secures a ₹203 Crore tourism push to upgrade heritage and pilgrimage infrastructure.

₹203 Crore Tourism Push for Bihar: Bodh Gaya, Sonepur Mela & Ambika Bhawani Temple Set for Development
Bihar has the stories. Now, three of its most important destinations are getting the infrastructure to help tell those stories to a much bigger audience.
From the spiritual heart of Bodh Gaya to the cultural energy of Sonepur Mela and the faith surrounding Ambika Bhawani Temple in Saran, three tourism projects are bringing a combined investment of about ₹203 crore into Bihar’s tourism infrastructure.
The projects cover three very different experiences — Buddhist heritage, cultural tourism and pilgrimage. More importantly, they could create opportunities for the people and businesses that depend on visitors.
According to government records, the Buddhist Meditation & Experience Centre in Bodh Gaya has received ₹165.44 crore. Meanwhile, tourist facilities at Sonepur Mela Ground have been sanctioned ₹24.29 crore. The Ambika Bhawani Temple project in Saran has received ₹13.29 crore under the PRASHAD Scheme.
Together, the three projects total ₹203.02 crore.
Bodh Gaya Gets the Biggest Tourism Investment
For a visitor, Bodh Gaya may look like a destination centred around its famous temples and monuments.
For millions of Buddhists, however, the place means something much deeper.
Bodh Gaya is associated with Gautama Buddha’s enlightenment. As a result, it remains one of the world’s most important Buddhist pilgrimage destinations.
That makes the ₹165.44-crore Buddhist Meditation & Experience Centre particularly significant.
The project comes under Swadesh Darshan 2.0, the tourism ministry’s destination-development programme. Importantly, the scheme places greater emphasis on creating complete tourism experiences rather than developing attractions in isolation.
Why the Bodh Gaya Project Matters
Better infrastructure can change how travellers experience a destination.
Instead of arriving, visiting one landmark and leaving, tourists may spend more time exploring the area. As a result, local hotels, restaurants, guides, transport operators and shops can all become part of the tourism economy.
Bodh Gaya also has something many destinations spend years trying to build: an established international identity.
Now, the opportunity is to turn that global recognition into longer stays, richer experiences and greater local economic activity.
Sonepur Mela Gets a ₹24.29 Crore Infrastructure Boost
Then there is Sonepur.
The Sonepur Mela is not a conventional tourist attraction. Rather, it is a living cultural experience that brings together traditions, commerce, faith, food and communities.
