Bihar Declared Naxal-Free: Last Armed Maoist Surrenders in Munger, Marking Historic Shift

From Decades of Fear to a Future of Peace

In a landmark development, Bihar has officially been declared free of active armed Naxal activities. The historic milestone came after the formal surrender of the last armed Maoist commander, Suresh Koda, in Munger.

With this surrender, the state closes a long and painful chapter of armed insurgency that spanned several decades.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) for the Munger range, Rakesh Kumar, confirmed the breakthrough, stating that no armed Naxalite squad is currently active in any of the 23 districts once affected by extremism.

From 23 Affected Districts to Zero Incidents

Back in 2012, twenty-three districts in Bihar struggled with Naxal influence. During the 1970s and 1980s, central Bihar districts had become strongholds of extremist activity, slowing development and bringing fear into rural life.

Yet, sustained joint action by the Central and State Governments changed the reality:

• In 2025, not a single armed Naxalite incident was reported in Bihar.
• Security forces arrested 220 active cadres and recovered major illegal caches.
• Surrender and rehabilitation policies offered former cadres a dignified return to mainstream society.

Rehabilitation and Policy Support in Action

Importantly, this historic transition did not rely on force alone. The District Magistrate of Munger, Nikhil Dhanraj Nippanikar, confirmed that Suresh Koda will receive all benefits under the Central and State Government surrender and rehabilitation scheme.

Meanwhile, Suresh Koda’s wife, Pramila Devi, expressed deep relief and happiness, noting that their family can finally live in peace without fear.

This declaration permanently reshapes Bihar’s identity. For decades, the label “Naxal-affected” weighed heavily on multiple districts. Now, that tag is gone.
