The Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) has announced a monumental step toward uplifting the sports infrastructure in the state by launching the reconstruction of Moin-ul-Haq Stadium, Patna’s historic cricket venue. This ambitious project not only promises to enhance Bihar’s sporting landscape but also brings hope to budding cricketers of the region, aiming to put Bihar on the cricketing map at the national and international levels.
Previously known as Rajendra Nagar Stadium, the stadium was renamed in 1970 to honor Moin-ul-Haq, a luminary in Indian sports. As the general secretary of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the chef-de-mission of the Indian Olympic teams for the 1948 London Olympics and the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, Moin-ul-Haq played a significant role in India’s sporting history. Additionally, he was a founding vice-president of the Bihar Cricket Association in 1936, further solidifying his legacy within Bihar’s cricketing roots.
This iconic venue has hosted nine One Day International (ODI) matches, including a match from the 1996 Cricket World Cup. As a multi-purpose stadium, it has been an integral part of Indian cricket history and holds memories cherished by sports fans.
The much-needed renovation of Moin-ul-Haq Stadium, announced by BCA president Rakesh Tiwari, is set to commence in September 2024. The reconstruction will focus on transforming the stadium into a world-class facility, equipped with modern technology and infrastructure, attracting national and international events.
The BCA secured a long-term lease for the stadium from the Bihar Government in March 2024, enabling this groundbreaking project to move forward.
